History

Before the French Revolution

The franc was introduced by King John II in 1360. Its name comes from the inscription, Johannes Dei Gratia Francorum Rex (“Jean by the grace of God King of the Franks”), and its value was set as one livre tournois (a money of account). Francs were later minted under Charles V, Henry III and Henri IV.

Louis XIII of France stopped minting the franc in 1641 (replacing it with the cu and Louis d’Or), but use of the name “franc” continued in accounting as a synonym for the livre tournois.

French Revolution

The decimal “franc” was established as the national currency by the French Revolutionary Convention in 1795 as a decimal unit (1 franc = 10 decimes = 100 centimes) of 4.5 g of fine silver. This was slightly less than the livre of 4.505 g but the franc was set in 1796 at 1.0125 livres (1 livre, 3 deniers), reflecting in part the past minting of sub-standard coins.

Official Auctioneer of the ANA World’s Fair of Money, Aug. 11-16

The Official Currency Auction of the 2010 ANA World’s Fair of Money in Boston, MA will be conducted by Heritage Auctions Aug. 11-16. The auction includes three floor sessions and one online session. Lot viewing will be conducted at the Hynes Convention Center, Room 210, 900 Boylston St., Boston, MA 02115 and the floor sessions will be held at the Hynes Convention Center, Room 203, 900 Boylston St., Boston, MA 02115.

In addition to lot viewing in Boston, a preliminary lot viewing will take place at Heritage Galleries Beverly Hills, 9478 W. Olympic Blvd., Suite #100, Beverly Hills, CA 90212 on Friday, July 30, 2010 and Saturday, July 31, 2010.

Session One will begin on Wednesday evening, Aug. 11, at 6 p.m. ET and includes Continental Currency, Colonial Currency, Fractional Currency, Encased Postage, Obsolete Currency, Confederate Notes, a Confederate Bond, Miscellaneous, Postal Notes, Military Payment Certificates, World Currency, and Canadian Currency.

The conventional wisdom is that once the value of the Chinese Yuan is increased, the USA’s trade deficit with China would start falling. This reasoning has prompted many Americans to push for further, faster revaluation of the Yuan even after China changed its currency policy.

For those who endorse this rationale, the Yuan’s value is a paramount factor behind China’s, and their country’s trade balances.

But for John Ross, former deputy mayor of London in charge of economic and business policy, the trade gap between a country and China would widen instead of narrowing down, at least in the short term, if the Yuan’s values go up.

Mr. Ross, a visiting professor at Antai College of Economics and Management in Shanghai Jiaotong University, says that once the Yuan’s value rises the Americans would demand further revaluation, ultimately forcing the Yuan to rise to a level that would not only disrupt China’s trade and economy, but also pose a threat to the entire World’s economy.

The Federal Reserve released their Beige Book analysis today. The Fed reports that manufacturing activity expanded in most districts, although several districts leveled off during the reporting period. Their data was collected before July 19th.

Consumer spending during the summer was “generally positive”. Year-to-year sales in New York, Philadelphia, Minneapolis, and Kansas City Districts were higher. Dallas showed “solid gains” while sales in Boston were “mixed”. There were slight increases in sales in Cleveland, Atlanta, Chicago, and San Francisco Districts. The Richmond district showed mixed results for sales.

Australian Dollar Exchange Rates

The Australian dollar dropped against all major currencies today. The Aussie was down 1.214 percent against the Swiss franc, .883 percent against the British pound sterling, 1.398 percent against the Japanese yen, and .837 percent against the euro (survey #1 below).

Foreign Currency Market Update – GBP / NZD Update

The pound bounced by seven cents from July 13th to July 19th, but gave back those gains last week, making a new four week low on Thursday even as UK retail sales data for June beat expectations. Things looked a little better on Friday. Second quarter GDP figures showed the UK economy grew at 1.1% in the second quarter, an improvement on the 0.3% first quarter figure and much better than analysts had expected. The pound rallied against all other major currencies, but gains against the high yielders were limited, and we are already flirting with new lows against the Kiwi this morning.

The Kiwi dollar has also been benefitting from US dollar weakness as investors continue to take on more risk and buy high yielding assets following the European bank stress test results on Friday. Only seven regional banks failed to make the cut, helping to calm investor nerves and add weight to the fragile recovery.
